FR. OSCAR Andrada will pursue his bid for a seat in the Municipal Council of Carles despite the controversy hounding his candidacy.

Mayor Felipe Bernal confirmed Tuesday that Andrada, parish priest of Barangay Bongco in Pototan, is serious in his intention to serve the people of Carles.

The candidacy of Andrada, who is under the Archdiocese of Jaro, has drawn mixed reactions from various quarters as he is the first ever Catholic clergyman in the country joining the election.

He is running under the ruling Lakas-CMD along with Bernal.

Msgr. Enrique Perez of Archdiocese of Jaro said there is nothing wrong with Andrada's candidacy.

Andrada's friend Fr. Boy Celis, a campus minister, had earlier said the former's move is "an act of charity or a service to the community."

Andrada is among the 24 candidates for councilor in Carles.

But instead of using Fr. Oca as his nickname, he placed "Toto Oca" in his certificate of candidacy.

Celis said that if ever Andrada would win, he has to choose what work he will pursue. He has to retire or resign as parish priest to do his legislative work as a town councilor, he said.

Andrada completed a Masters in Business Administration at the Asian Institute of Management, the only priest in the Archdiocese of Jaro who holds such a degree.
