Garin-Torres 'final' talk set Jan. 15

THE "final" negotiation on the possible alliance between businessman Jaime Torres and first district Rep. Oscar Garin will be held on Jan. 15.

This was disclosed Tuesday by Igbaras Mayor James Esmeralda who said that although the mayors of the first district do not anymore expect a positive result, they are still giving Torres and Garin more time to negotiate.

Of the four members of San Joaquin-Miag-ao-Igbaras-Tigbauan (Smit) mayors' group, Daisy Sibya of San Joaquin and Gerardo Flores of Miag-ao have already decided to support the reelection bid of Gov. Niel Tupas.

All the Smit mayors, including Torres' wife, Mayor Myrna Flores of Tigbauan, enjoyed the political machinery of the business in 2001 election.

Torres, however, lost to Garin in his congressional bid.

For the May 10 elections, Torres is seeking the same post anew under the Puwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP). His opponents are Garin's daughter-in-law, Provincial Board Member Janette Garin of Lakas-CMD, and Miagao Councilor Elmer Tesoro of Ugyon/Liberal Party.

Eventhough Garin already fielded his daughter-in-law as his successor, Torres is reportedly still optimistic the congressman will ask the board member to give way.

For her part, the board member told Sun.Star she is not privy to the talks between Torres and her father-in-law.

But she admitted that nothing is definite until the two are through with the negotiations. "At this point, I'm definitely running," the board member said.

In the first district, the congressman's son-in-law, lawyer Lex Colada, is also running for board member along with Dr. Macario Napulan of Miagao.

Napulan replaced Nicolas Gentolea, who withdrew his candidacy last week. (Jay Dooma Balnig and Nanette L. Guadalquiver)
