Guv to risk political career on fight against illegal fishing

GOV. Niel Tupas Sr. said Tuesday he would risk his political plan in his campaign against the illegal fishing activities in Iloilo.

"No amount of threats and intimidation, and political blackmail, will make me soften up on this campaign," he said in his State of the Province Address delivered before the members of the Provincial Board Tuesday afternoon.

"I will never compromise even if it will affect my political plan."

Before he assumed office in 2001, he said, unabated illegal fishing activities such as dynamite fishing and the use of active fishing gear threatened to completely destroy the province's marine resources.

"And so I went to battle against these destructive means of fishing," he said.
Contrary to what illegal fishers claim, the small and marginal fishermen in the northern towns of Iloilo are starting to reap the fruits of this campaign, he added. NLG
