Traffic aide nabbed for extortion anew By Ruby P. Sulibrico
A TRAFFIC aide of Iloilo City was arrested during an entrapment operation Monday evening when he tried to extort money from a truck driver.
Mayor Jerry Treņas said he will terminate Traffic Enforcer Nelson Nolasco upon the recommendation of Insp. Nathaniel Campos, chief of the Traffic Management and Engineering Unit (TMEU).
Complainant Jimmy Gellangarin of Mandurriao said Nolasco, who is assigned in Gen. Luna St., asked for P250 in exchange for his license.
Gellangarin, a driver of a delivery truck, was cited by Nolasco for violation of truck ban at around 4 p.m.
Nolasco told him, he said, that he has to pay for a P500 fine.
But before Gellangarin left, Nolasco supposedly told him to come back later as he will return his driver's license if he will pay him P250.
Instead of following Nolasco's instruction, Gellangarin sought assistance from Senior Insp. Ben Genodepa of Police Precinct 1.
At around 6 p.m., Gellangarin met Nolasco and gave him P250.
The latter then returned his driver's license.
After that, PO1 Peter Asuncion and PO2 Fidel Mosquito approached Nolasco and arrested him.
Nolasco, who is now detained at the PP1 cell, denied extorting money from Gellangarin. The driver gave him the money voluntarily, he said.
Police records show Nolasco was also arrested during an entrapment operation years ago when he tried to extort mney from a driver of a Jaro CPU jeepney.
