Lacson overwhelmed by 'warm reception' in WV

* During his campaign sorties in Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo and Negros Occidental, Lacson says, he was surprised by the people's response to his presence
* As he did not rate well in Region 6 in surveys, he was surprised by the people's warm response, he adds

LABAN ng Demokratikong Pilipino presidential candidate Sen. Panfilo Lacson lauded what he calls the warm reception of the people in Western Visayas during his visit to the region Tuesday and Wednesday.

It's a gamble that paid off, he said of his campaign sorties in the region where he did not rate well in surveys.

During his campaign sorties in Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo and Negros Occidental, Lacson said he was surprised by the people's response to his presence.

This only shows, he said, that surveys would never be an accurate measure in determining the winnability of a candidate.

"If I will believe the surveys now that could make me withdraw from the race.

But I will not do that because of the reception that we have been receiving. So we'll carry on with the fight until election day," Lacson said in a press statement.

Had he believed the Palace-commissioned surveys that consistently show he is a "dead candidate", then "I would not have become a senator".

"When I ran for senator, (the surveys) never put me within the winning circle of the Magic 13. They always put me either number 17, 18 or 19 but I finished at number 7," he noted.

In most of the surveys, Lacson is perceived to be the weakest candidate as he is consistently ranked fourth in the presidential race, with President Arroyo always placing second to actor Fernando Poe Jr.

Lacson said he was overwhelmed by the response in Iloilo, considered the turf of First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo.

Fifth District Rep. Rolex Suplico, point man of Lacson's campaign in Iloilo, earlier said the opposition under Lacson was myth-shattering and that the Visayas would not go solid for the administration.

According to Suplico, the Ilonggos, who are very "regionalistic", would vote for Lacson since he is the only presidential candidate who happens to have Ilonggo blood.

Lacson's ancestors are from Molo, Iloilo City.
