SIX young Ilonggo dribblers stood out during the Iloilo City leg of the "Try-outs ng Bayan" spearheaded by the Cebuana Lhuiller team.

They are Paul Rosal, 6'3," of University of Iloilo; Raffy Ynion, 6'2," Sun Yat Sen High School; Huilliard Seth Yap, 5'11," Iloilo Chinese Commercial High School; Elben Leonida, 5'10," University of San Agustin; Kristoffer Arriola,
5'10, Western Institute Technology; and Samson King Jr., 5'10," Sta. Maria Catholic College.

The six are among the about 150 hopefuls who took part in the try-out at the Iloilo Sports Complex on February 18 in coordination with the Iloilo Basketball League.

"Try-outs ng Bayan" aim to discover a new breed of basketball heroes to banner the country in future national and international competitions.

The Cebuana Lhuiller spearheads the nationwide search for cagers to be tapped for the national pool.

The event, which had a successful stint in Mindanao, had its Bacolod City leg Thursday at the West Negros College gym.

The two-pronged program is geared towards the development of Philippine basketball in line with the company's commitment to the country's bid to regain basketball supremacy in Asia.

Aside from the "Try-outs ng Bayan" program, basketball clinics will also be delivered by four of the RP-Cebuana Lhuillier team's core members -- Ricky Calimag, Dennis Madrid, Celino Cruz and Richard Melencio, and will be administered by national mentors Dong Vergiere and Boyzie Zamar.

The clinic aims to provide the country's young and talented players the opportunity to sharpen their skills and learn first hand from sports heroes.

Participants will also be taught ball handling, dribbling, footwork, free throws, power lay-ups and other techniques.

The clinic is open to kids aged 12-17 years old.

The activities are being supported by Cebuana Lhuiller Pawnshop represented by RP-Cebuana Lhuiller team manager and chief backer Jean Henri Lhuiller.
