PG Zoluaga's 'Behind Bars'
By Kathy Villalon Cinco

THE works of one of Iloilo's most celebrated artists, PG Zoluaga, will be featured tonight at Cucho Cafe, a hangout just beside Colegio de San Jose.

Dubbed "Behind Bars", the exhibit will not touch on the life of prisoners, but rather on the nightlife, specifically, on what's going on in bars.

His artworks, where his linear style and richness in texture will be evident, will depict different bar scenes - one for the road, two for the road and three for the road.

The exhibit will also feature his "padulom" series that contains mixed media works on paper coupled with poetry. Art enthusiasts will also be treated to Zoluaga's installation artworks.

The artist

Zoluaga passion's for art started when he was only six. This passion led him to study Landscape Architecture at the University of the Philippines and Structural Architecture at the University of Agustin. He has designed the houses of some of his close friends.

At present, he does interior designing and landscaping, painting and traveling.

Zoluaga's first subjects touched on what was legendary and historical. He painted the legend of Mt. Apik of Tubungan and also did "Bulalakaw" series, which later on evolved into environmental pieces.

That's when he started to use white sand, terra cotta and patadyong in his works. One example is his portrayal of the two sides of Dinagyang in a two-panel installation art. One panel is in black and shows a bottle of beer at the center of the festival. The panel is now on display at Cucho. The other panel is in black and shows the Sto. Niño at the center. It is now displayed at the Dagyaw Center.

Zoluaga was the country's representative to the 1998 Asean Art Awards in Hanoi, Vietnam. He also represented the country to the 1995 International Theater and Music Conference in Melbourne, Australia.

He was a winner in the Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards in 1998 and the Art Association of the Philippines' Centennial Painting Competition in 1998.

His other works are now being exhibited in a group show at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, titled "Sungduan 3: Making the Local." The exhibit is sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA) in celebration of the arts month.

He is a member of the Hubon Madya-as Artist Group, Visayas Islands Visual Artists Association, Iloilo Visual Artists Association, Philippine Printmakers' Association, Art Association of the Philippines and Artista kag Manunulay nga Makibanwahanon (Ambon).
