Military yet to charge assailants of Cafgu

THE military has yet to file charges against the four New People's Army (NPA) rebels who gunned down Cafgu member Napoleon Estacio in Igbaras last week.

Only one of them has been identified so far. Ka Jess and his three companions continue to be the subjects of the Philippine Army's manhunt operation.

Reports said Estacio's wife saw her husband being shot to death by the NPA rebels.

Estacio, 46, who was detailed at Pinawpawan detachment of the Philippine Army, was killed around 8 a.m. of Feb. 2004 while he was biking his way to Igtalungon High School to attend the meeting of his daughter.

The assailants, who were between 17 and 19 years old, were wearing high school uniforms to disguise themselves as students. They shot the victim five times using caliber .45 pistols.

Estacio's death could be part of the NPA's counter-attack to the AFP's Special Operations Team (SOT) in several rebel-infiltrated barangays in Igbaras especially in Barangay Igtalungon.

Other barangays considered as highly influenced by rebels are Tabiak and Cabugao.

Svholarships

Meanwhile, Estacio's three children will receive scholarship grants from the government.

"We are working out scholarships for Estacio's three children," Lt. Raul Vigo, commander of the Igbaras-based 31st Reconnaissance Company, said.

The family of Estacio, who was under the 12th Infantry Battalion's Cadre Company based in Capiz, will also avail of burial and other benefits. RPS
