1,500 athletes see action in WVRAA meet in Antique
* Sen. Robert Jaworski underscores need for unity through sports
* Most of the athletes are from Negros Occidental, 331; Iloilo, 310; Aklan 248; Antique, 235; Capiz, 185; and Guimaras, 195
* Both elementary and secondary athletes are competing in archery, athletics, chess, table tennis, volleyball, taekwondo, swimming, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, basketball, softball, football and badminton
SAN JOSE, Antique -- A total of 1,504 athletes from six provinces in Western Visayas are seeing action in this year's Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet, which opened here Sunday.
Sen. Robert Jaworski, head of the Senate committee on sports, graced the opening ceremonies held at the Binirayan Sports Complex.
Jaworski, who is seeking reelection under the K-4 administration coalition, lauded school and government officials in the region for organizing the regional sports event.
The senator underscored the need for unity through sports especially at this time when "the country is too fragmented," he said.
Jaworski added that being sports is not only to compete and win medals but also to prepare the youth to the "bigger game" of life.
Most of the athletes are from Negros Occidental, 331; Iloilo, 310; Aklan 248; Antique, 235; Capiz, 185; and Guimaras, 195.
During yesterday's opening program, Fr. Fortunato Abiera led the invocation. Officials of Bago City Schools Division, host of the 2003 WVRAA Meet, then turned over the WVRAA banner this year's host, Antique School's Division.
The raising of the WVRAA banner was led by Antique Gov. Salvacion Perez, Antique Rep. Exequiel Javier, Mayor Fernando Corvera and Mr. Angel Gilvas.
Jose Marie Pava, taekwondo gold medalist, lighted the WVRAA Torch of Peace.
DepEd Regional Director Victorino Tirol officially declared the 2004 WVRAA Meet open.
Events and venues
Both elementary and secondary athletes are competing in archery, athletics, chess, table tennis, volleyball, taekwondo, swimming, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, basketball, softball, football and badminton.
The games will be held at Binirayan Sports Complex, Antique National School, President Diosdado Macapagal Promo Center (trade town), Department of Education Division Office, St. Anthony's College, Evelio B. Javier Freedom Park, Del Angel Salazar Memorial School and Evelio B. Javier Gym. Cecille Tongcua with Elena Frisco
