Buyco scores Debuque for no-show in debate By Jay Dooma Balnig
THE supposed face-off between the two controversial Anilao mayoral candidates never materialized as Mayor Joel "Batok" Debuque refused at the last hour to face challenger Elmer "Boy" Buyco in a debate sponsored by a local radio station.
The debate was the supposed to be the first face-to-face encounter between Debuque and Buyco after Buyco was ambushed the night of March 19.
Buyco lambasted Debuque, claiming the incumbent mayor is "in a mess" in his preparation for his reelection bid.
He could not defend his poor performance as a chief executive, he added.
The "Candidates Forum" of Aksyon Radyo-Iloilo was scheduled last March 26 at Marina Restaurant in Iloilo City.
Debuque is unprepared that he is afraid to defend the issues involving him, Buyco further said.
Last Tuesday, Supt. Roberto Nufable, director of the 4th Mobile Group, confirmed that the attack by a group of armed men against Buyco was indeed an ambush.
Nufable said that after a thorough investigation and gathering of evidence in the crime scene, they confirmed that Buyco was indeed ambushed.
He made the confirmation following doubts raised on the veracity of Buyco's claim that he was attacked by armed men the night of March 19 while on his way home to the Poblacion.
Buyco earlier said the incident might have been perpetrated by his political opponent but Debuque denied the accusations.
