Real may stay on as concurrent city election registrar By Jay Dooma Balnig
ALTHOUGH Iloilo City election registrar Daisy Real would be relieved from her post effective Thursday, she might remain as chief of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in the cities of Iloilo and Bacolod.
Regional Election Attorney Dennis Ausan said Wednesday that while there is no replacement for Real yet, she will hold the concurrent position as election registrar of both cities.
Real, who personally requested for a transfer, is replacing Bacolod City election registrar Intaco Rambit.
Ausan said though, that a lawyer from Antique already applied as Real's replacement.
However, former Comelec regional director Hector Masna said he believes Real cannot easily handle two highly-urbanized cities, considering the huge number of voters in each area.
Iloilo City has 273,000 registered voters, covering 17,000 polling precincts.
Ausan said the Comelec regional office might also appoint someone who is not a lawyer to assume Real's Iloilo City post, but during the canvassing, a lawyer-election officer should take over.
The Omnibus Election Code provides that highly urbanized cities like Iloilo City should have a lawyer as election officer who would represent the City's Board of Canvassers (BOC).
The regional office is also considering Ausan and Iloilo provincial election officer Tomas Valera as possible replacements of Real.
