First coco seed garden launched in San Enrique
THE country's first coco seed garden was launched at San Enrique, Iloilo recently by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA).
During the People's Day celebration in the municipality, officials of DENR, PCA and San Enrique signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) or the launching of the Coconut Seed Garden and Ecological Park.
The project aims to propagate good quality coconut seeds, PCA Director Jose Cruz said.
Located at Barangay Madarag, the coco seed garden covers an area of 117 hectares.
Cruz said that through the project, the coconut industry would be assured reliability of raw materials for coconut production.
It would create job opportunities, generate income for local communities, provide food security, promote eco-tourism, expand permanent forest cover and increase the number of wildlife in the area, he added.
Mayor Zafiro Palabrica welcomed the project as he lauded the DENR for bringing government services closer to the people.
DENR Regional Technical Director for Forestry Rainer Ecang encouraged the participants in the project area to continue planting trees to establish permanent areas for carbon sink that could serve as collateral to acquire financial support for development projects from donor countries now looking at the Philippines as among the priority areas after the Congress ratified the agreements under the Kyoto Protocol.
The Kyoto Protocol seeks to reduce carbon emissions of participating countries in a given period of time.
PCA Provincial Director Eduardo Masuecos appealed for support from the project beneficiaries to assure higher survival rate and eventual success of the project.
