AN EARLY morning fire destroyed 23 stalls in a market located in Simon Ledesma St., Jaro, Iloilo City.

Fire Officer 3 Ronnie Malijan said the fire started at around 2:30 a.m. from the grocery store of Wanny Lapastora.

Aside from Lapastora's stall, also destroyed were those of Felix Mosqueda, Buenvenida Coronado, Ramil Coronado, Rosita Sy, William Paredes, Mila Jardeleza, Herminia Salava, Efren Aptingo, Rey Baylon, Yaya Baylon, Lando Paredes, Lating Sustento, Aaron Matillano, Myrna Hiponia, Arnel Baylon, Nelson Baylon, William Losa, Ulysses Toreno, Elisa Coronado, Tita Guinangan and Ben Sy.

Total damage was estimated at P1.2 million.

Earlier, employees of the Panay Electric Company (Peco) conducted an operation against illegal electrical connections in the market and cut off some wirings.

Arson investigators of the Bureau of Fire Protection surmised personnel of Peco forgot to cover the open wires.

They are also looking into the "overloading" of the electric connections as the cause of fire.RPS
