Guimbal fest attracts more tourists By Ruby P. Silubrico
MORE tourists witnessed this year's Bantayan festival in Guimbal, contributing to the success of the weeklong festivity that ended March 3.
"Our festival was very successful," Mayor Oscar "Richard" Garin Jr. said. "More activities were held this year but we have lesser expenses."
Garin said he is grateful that the Guimbalanons have already "internalized and understood" the reason for celebrating Bantayan festival.
Through its unique activities, the festival attracted more tourists this year. Some came from abroad such as United States, Canada and London.
"Through our Bantanyan Festival, the moral and pride of Guimbalanon were boosted. We improved this year's festival to enable our people to really understand its meaning and history," Garin added. "It also made the Guimbalanons more united and confident on their municipal officials."
The festival was a celebration of the birth of a new history and culture of the people of Guimbal as a tribute and reverence to the triumphant struggle of its ancestors for a meaningful existence. The magic of the gimba (drum) and the bantayan (watchtower) were the festival's major features.
This year, additional activities include volleyball beach competition, Bikini Open competition and reenactment of the Moro raids that was performed Friday afternoon.
About 60 participants took part in this year's Paraw contest compared to only 20 last year.
