UP-Diliman, UST clinch 2004 Pava crown
Best setter Gravenio Gianan of the University of the Philippines-Diliman (UP-D) set a perfect toss to teammate Jerico Hubalde, the tournament's best attacker, to clinch the championship title over University of the Visayas (UV) in the Men's division of the 2004 National Intercollegiate Volleyball Championship yesterday at the Iloilo Doctors' College gym.
Seeing that they needed just a point, Gianan signaled to sent Hubalde a successful quick as their last attack in set 3, leading the UP-D Fighting Maroons to a sweep against the UV Green Lancers, 3-0 - 27-25, 25-16, 25-14.
Green Lancers topped bracket B after the eliminations with a 4-0 record and reeled off IDC in their crossover match. UP-D finished with 3-1 and halted bracket A's top seeded UST from their four-game winning streak with a convincing 3-0 win during the second crossover match.
UV, representing Cebu, gave UP-D a pressure after they beat the latter in Game 5 in the elimination round.
At the start of the championship game, UP-D was not shaken when UV pulled away to 9-3 early in set 1. UP-D's coach Vic Isada called a timeout to regroup his team, prompting the
Maroons to a come back, knotting the game to 21 all.
The Cebuanos failed to receive the ball after a jump-off service of Paolo Martinez, UP-D libero, giving UP-D their first lead of the game, 22-21. There were six exchanges of the lead after the two tied again to 24 all.
UV made the first volley but UP-D scored the three consecutive points to end the first set to 27-25. UP-D then controlled sets 2 and 3.
UP-D Fighting Maroons is composed of Joseph Ramos (6), Jarod Hubalde (2), Allen Mendoza (8), Jerome Lingo (7), Jason Almario (11), Gravenio Gianan (14), Lino Antonio (12), Raphael Ordoņez (10), Ronald Lomague (4), Jerico Hubalde (5), Nikki Fajardo (16) and Paolo Martinez (19.
UV Green Lancers, headed by coach Raffy Briones, is comprised of Alfie Pilapil (1), Daniel Lastimoso (3), Julius Baguio (4), Maynaro Alejandro (5), Lemuel Pepito (6), Joel Mendoza (7), Benjie Arregio (8), Junriel Magdadaro (10), Silvestre Ponce (12), Cesar Agravante (13), Micheal Filoteo (16), and Rey Paras (libero).
UST won the battle for third over host team University of San Agustin
USA.
Women's division
Meanwhile, University of Sto. Tomas (UST) broke the hope of University of St. La Salle (USLS) to defend their title when they dumped the latter in a 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 victory.
UST grabbed the title from USLS volleybelles, who clinched last year's title in Baguio City.
USLS's credentials include championship crowns in McDonald's Battle of Champions, Prisaa, Ched Palaro, University Games and La Salle Invitational.
Best attacker Coyu Kang of UST scored everywhere, every time her teammate best setter Piņo Grace provided her the best tosses in the game.
UST, before entering the finals, defeated the UP Fighting Maroons while USLS beat host team USA in the crossover match.
UP-D finished third while USA, fourth.
Individual winners
In the Men's division, awarded Best Server was Lemuel Pepito of UV; Best Receiver, Maynaro Alejandrino of UV; Best Setter Gravenio Gianan of UP-D; Best Attacker, Jerico Hubalde of UP-D; Best Blocker, Ronald Lomaque of UP-D and Best Libero, Paolo Martinez of UP-D.
The six best of the volleyball championship was chosen as the Mythical 6. Hubalde was awarded the Most Valuable Player.
Best Server of Women's Division is UST's Lourdes Palomo; Best Receiver, Mary Grace Caile of UST; Best Setter, Piņo Grace of UST; Best Attacker, Coyu Kang of UST; Best Blocker, Michelle Ortigosa of USLS; and Best Libero, Rebbie Delotindo. Mary Jean Balse was chosen the Most Valuable Player.
