Kidnappers target schoolkids By Ruby P. Silubrico
POLICE provincial director Senior Supt. Reynaldo Rafal ordered tight security in school zones after six persons attempted to kidnap four students of Dueñas Central Elementary School early this week.
Rafal said he directed the Dueñas Police Station to provide security in the town's elementary school to deter further kidnapping attempts.
Police said at around 4 p.m. Monday, six persons outside the school approached first grader Melicenth Dangan.
Three women gave her a candy and convinced to go with them, but the girl refused for she was waiting for her mother, a teacher in the same school.
The next day, at around 12 noon, two classmates of Dangan, Precious Pacardo and Neslie Ann Lagurda, were also approached by the same persons. They also convinced the girls to go with them but the children also refused.
Minutes later, fourth-grader Jojie Pacapo was forced by the same persons to go with them, but he was able to sneak away.
Though Rafal said he is not discounting the possibility of the presence of kidnappers, he said parents need not panic.
"There's no need for alarm. I have instructed my men to secure all schools in their respective areas," he said.
Rafal said he has ordered an investigation on the Dueñas incident.
The Iloilo Provincial Police Office also asked assistance from the tanods to augment their monitoring operations.
School guards were also directed to be extra cautious of their surroundings.
