3 illegal fishers nabbed in Estancia By Ruby P. Silubrico
THREE persons engaged in illegal fishing were nabbed Friday morning by the Provincial Bantay Dagat Task Force at Barangay Bayas, Estancia, Iloilo.
The Bantay Dagat was conducting monitoring operations along the coastal area of Estancia when they spotted M/V Joey at around 11 p.m. violating fishery law.
Three crew members manning the boat were identified as Roberto Relox of Calumpang, Estancia; Sufronio Banatayao of Poblacion 2, Estancia, and Ticzon Alvarez of Roxas City.
The boat is owned by Bernadeth Gamascoranof of Zone 2, Estancia, Iloilo.
Insp. Bienvenido Tupas, Estancia police chief, said the suspects were arrested for using fine nets in catching fish which is a violation of Republic Act 8550 or the Philippine Fishery Code.
Board Member Angel Briones earlier requested Governor Niel Tupas Sr. to make the northern towns of Ajuy, Estancia, and their neighboring areas as the main base of the Provincial Bantay Dagat so that they could closely monitor the activities of illegal fishing operators.
Despite the continued campaign spearheaded by the Provincial Bantay Dagat, Briones said he noticed that illegal fishing operations in the north remain rampant.
He noted that during his recent visit to Punta Buri Island in Ajuy, he saw many illegal fishers operating in the area.
The governor said illegal fishing is indeed rampant in Ajuy and he has already asked Mayor Jett Roxas to act on these reports.
