Gonzales tags ex-mayor, cops in drug trade By Jay Dooma Balnig
* Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr. says he informed PNP Director General Edgardo Aglipay on the involvement of a former mayor and several policemen in illegal drug trade
* Gonzalez, however, refuses to name them pending the Aglipay's investigation
JUSTICE Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr. has asked PNP Director General Edgardo Aglipay to investigate the alleged involvement of a former mayor of Iloilo and several policemen in illegal drug trade.
Gonzalez confirmed in an interview with Aksyon Radyo-Iloilo he sent Aglipay a letter informing him of the former mayor's illegal drug activities.
He added at least five policemen are protecting an illegal drug dealer in Barangay Bakhaw, Mandurriao and are receiving P25,000 protection money every week.
The justice secretary, however, refused to name them pending the Aglipay's investigation.
Gonzalez said his son, Rep. Raul Gonzalez Jr., is supposed to deliver a privilege speech on the issue but he requested the solon to wait until the investigation is over.
Reports said the former mayor and the police officers met in a mall in Iloilo City several months ago.
During the mid-1990's, the 6th Regional Anti-Narcotics Group revealed that several town mayors in Iloilo, most of them young, are using illegal drugs. Their identities, however, were never revealed. One of their companions was a son of a big businessman.
Last Friday, Senior Supt. Reynaldo Rafal, chief of directorial staff of the Police Regional Office 6, admitted they received information that several personnel of the Regional Special Operations Group (Rsog) are protecting notorious drug pusher Jonathan Nava.
Nava, who is facing at least 15 illegal drug cases, escaped from the custody of Police Precinct 4 after he was arrested by operatives of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (Pdea) in a buy-bust operation in Molo, Iloilo City almost two weeks ago.
