Police: All angles explored in Aklan lawyer's killing By Ruby P. Silubrico
THE Aklan Police Provincial Office (Appo) is looking into all angles on the killing of prominent lawyer Edgar Calizo Sr. in Kalibo Saturday night.
We're looking into all possible motives, Supt. Odelardo Magayanes, police provincial director, told Sun.Star Iloilo.
Magayanes said it is possible the murder could be related to Calizo's work as a lawyer.
Calizo was the counsel for German Uwe Friezl, one of the suspects in the killing of another German and two other foreigners in Boracay last May.
He ran for mayor but lost in his hometown of Ibajay in the May elections.
Investigators are also looking into a connection with the activities of his elder brother, Manuel "Warren" Calizo Jr., a former top leader of the New People's Army in Panay, who later joined the breakaway Revolutionary Proletarian Army- Alex Boncayao Brigade.
Magayanes said Calizo, 45, was shot by unidentified three assailants at around 8:20 p.m. in front of his apartment in Catleya St.
He died inside the Isuzu Crosswind he was driving, at least 17 bullets hit him.
Calizo was about to enter the house with his helper RJ Nagtalon, 18, when three persons riding on a motorbike arrived. Nagtalon was able to seek cover under another vehicle when the gunmen fired at the lawyer. The gunmen were armed with .45 cal. pistol and a 9-mm handgun.
Magayanes said Nagtalon is now under their custody and he is optimistic he can provide valuable information on the gunmen's identities.
He said they would soon release the cartographic sketches of the three perpetrators.
Calizo's killing came a week after Herson "Boy" Hinolan, station manager of Bombo Radyo Kalibo, was gunned down near a carnival in D. Maagma St., Kalibo.
The lawyer just arrived from Boracay when he was killed and even dropped by the gasoline station where Hinolan was chased by the gunmen.
Before driving home, Calizo also asked the gasoline boy if he saw where Hinolan was shot.
