Miagao's celebrates '1st Heritage Week'

THE Municipality of Miagao will hold its '1st Heritage Week' celebration on December 11 to 17 to showcase the southern town as the only world heritage site in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The recognition was bestowed on Miagao by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (Unesco) on Dec. 11, 1993 for being the site of the Church of Sto. Tomas de Villanueva, one of the four baroque churches in the Philippines that survived the perils of time and space, as well as monumental symbols of homegrown artistry, architectural and engineering versatility, and the people's deep-seated religiosity.

"To give semblance to this affair, the Sangguniang Bayan (Municipal Council) passed Resolution 2004-039 declaring December 11-17 every year as Miagao Heritage Week," according to the celebration's background written by Randy Madrid of UP Visayas's Center for West Visayan Studies.

This year's 1st Miagao Heritage Week Celebration will feature a variety of socio-religious and cultural activities.

These include a Heritage Snack, featuring Miagao's homemade delicacies; a Heritage Walk in various local heritage sites;

a Grand Heritage Parade, featuring the eight World Heritage Sites in the Philippines, World Heritage Sites in Asia-Pacific, Africa, America, and Europe, and Miagao's Heritage Sites.

There will also be Patadyong and Hablon exhibits and a feature of 26 churches considered as Cultural Treasures.

Other activities are Christmas Musical and Parol Contest, and Lantern Parade.

During launching program on December 11, the UPV High school students will render an exotic dance on the 1001 Traditional and Contemporary Uses of the Patadyong.

Commissioner Rose Beatrix Angeles, chair of the committee on monuments and sites of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, will be the guest speaker.

Also expected to grace the affair are NCCA Chair Cecile Alvarez, Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano, Gov. Niel Tupas Sr., and University of San Agustin president Fr. Manuel Vergara, OSA.
