Iloilo ends 1st runner-up in futsal tourney

RICHARD Cañedo's three goals steered Negros Occidental Football Association-West Negros College to its first futsal title after defeating the Iloilo Football Association by a hairline in the thrilling finals of the 1st Philippine Football Federation-Adidas Futsal Championships Tuesday afternoon at the Iloilo Sports Complex.

Cañedo, who was also named tournament MVP, was brilliant against the defensive minded Ilonggos as he netted two crucial goals in the decisive second half.

Led by brothers Joshua and Norman Fegidero, who had a goal each in the match, Negros entered the second half with a 1-point, 4-3 lead. Cañedo later put them ahead by two goals after an impressive play in the 21st minute.

But Iloilo started to creep back slowly when Bob Rommel Javellana found the mark in the 23rd minute. Negros, however, returned the favor with Robert Cañedo scoring a goal in the following possession. Robert was named the tourney's best striker with 16 goals.

A determined Iloilo came back as Javellana notched another goal in the 29th minute, while Ronnie Melton Rapista added another one in the 39th, bringing the host team back to striking distance with the game tied at six goals apiece.

But the MVP was not to be denied his championship trophy.

Dodging defenders with ease and outwitting Cirilo Macasa, the tourney's best goalkeeper, Richard scored in the 34th minute and quickly followed it up in the 35th.

Iloilo desperately tried to cut the deficit with a furious barrage of goal attempts, but none found their mark. It seemed they were to running out of gas - and time.

The Negrenses took care of the lead until the final buzzer sounded, just to illustrate why they are hyped as the team to beat.

Iloilo finished 1st runner-up while Fair Play Awardee Cebu-Lhuillier routed Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental Football Association, 12-5, in the battle for second place. Despite the loss, Cagayan placed third overall.

Earlier in the semifinal round, Negros beat Cagayan, 19-4, while Iloilo nipped Cebu, 9-8.

The 1st PFF-Adidas Futsal Championships is also sponsored by WG&A Superferry, Aboitiz, Petron, and Red Ribbon Bakeshop.
