Englishman drowns in Boracay
THE body of an English national was recovered Thursday morning after hours of search operations conducted by the Philippine Coastguard and the Boracay rescue group.
Victim Anthony Chabuick was initially reported to have drowned, according to the Police Regional Office (PRO) 6.
Chief Superintendent George Aliño, police regional director, said Major Jack Wangky of the Boracay Special Unit reported that before the incident, Chabuick was diving with his friend, fellow Englishman Andrew Christopher Brown, and two dive masters of Fish Eye Dive Resort Wednesday afternoon.
At about 3:30 p.m. after their diving session, the two dive masters and Brown surfaced but Chabuick was nowhere to be found.
A search and rescue operation was conducted but it was suspended after 5 p.m.
The following morning, Chabuick's body was found 70 feet underwater.
Findings
Initial medical findings show Chabuick suffered a nitrogen narcosis, resulting from a direct toxic effect of high nitrogen pressure on the nerves.
It is an alcohol-like effect wherein the diver may feel and act totally drunk, and underwater, the sensation can be deadly.
Aliño said he directed the Scene of the Crime Operations (Soco) Team in Aklan to assist in the investigation.
He added that Wangky was instructed to send a letter to the British Embassy to inform them of Chabuick's death. (JMD)
