Mayor asks for understanding on garbage fee hike By Jennifer Depakakibo
ILOILO City Mayor Jerry Treñas asked for understanding on the garbage collection fee increase the City Government is implementing starting this January.
"I ask for the understanding of our people," Tre±as told reporters Sunday.
Treñas said the City Government needs to increase garbage fees to raise adequate funds to pay J.S. Layson and Company Inc., the firm which collects Iloilo City's garbage, costing P2.6 million a month or a total of P31 million a year.
He said J.S. Layson's contract with the City Government is still the same since the time of Mayor Mansueto Malabor despite the increase in the prices of gasoline and basic commodities.
At present, the City Government only gets P4 million a year from garbage collection fees.
With the increase in fees, the City Treasurer's Office projects a P14-million collection for 2005.
The garbage fees are collected on a quarterly basis.
Previously, restaurants were only charged P200 a year but now, from P350 to P9,000 a year, depending on the size of the establishment.
Residential buildings will now be charged P600 a year from the previous, P60.
Sari-sari stores will pay P20 to P30 a month while public market stalls, P50 to P100 a month.
The garbage collection fee increase is provided by Regulation Ordinance 2004-149 or The Iloilo City Environment Code of 2004.
For uncollected garbage, the public may call the hotline at 337-2760 and look for Cynthia Atas.
