Peñaflorida: Happy Birthday, TV Patrol sa Diyes! By Jobert Peñaflorida
LAST week, I mentioned about the double milestones I am marking this month as a print and broadcast journalist. While last week was my first anniversary as columnist, this week is the 2nd anniversary of TV Patrol Iloilo.
This means that I am looking forward to a terribly hectic week as our anniversary falls exactly within the very busy Dinagyang week, which begins today. So in the midst of the tedious preparations for the Dinagyang coverage, the women and men of the news department of ABS-CBN TV 10 are simultaneously working hard to offer special episodes to our viewers.
Today, I shall broadcast the news live from the Freedom Grandstand and we shall have live feeds from various points during the entire week.
Continuing our anniversary tradition, TV Patrol Iloilo will again honor the 2004 Newsmaker of the Year. Last year's winner Governor Niel Tupas heads the five finalists, which emerged from the in-house deliberation of our news reporters.
The others include Mayor Jerry Treñas, Provincial Board Member Manny Gallar, Jail Warden Juan Mabugat, and PNP Regional Director George Aliño.
A modification in the selection of the final winner is being introduced this year. While last year's winner was the top choice of viewers who texted their votes, this year, the text votes will only constitute 50 percent of the final score, with the other 50 percent coming from the results of the voting of the ABS-CBN News Department and select members of the local print and broadcast media. As of Friday, former Bombo anchorman Manny Gallar was ahead of the race, with 44 percent of the text votes, followed by Governor Tupas and Mayor Treñas, who are tied at 22 percent of the votes, each. ABS-CBN TV 10 will continue to receive text votes at 0919-410-5326 until 12 midnight of Thursday, with the winner known and awarded on Friday.
Last year, our news team celebrated our first anniversary by surprising a baby boy and his family in Barangay Bolilao in Mandurriao. The boy was celebrating his first birthday on our anniversary date. This time, as we celebrate year 2, we will join two special persons--an elderly at the Asilo de Molo and a sick child in Barangay Mansaya--both of whom are celebrating their birthdays exactly on January 20.
The last two years have been very difficult and struggling years for our fledgling news program. But the earnest efforts exerted by our aggressive and youthful news team, headed by veteran newshen Gemma Villanueva, have truly paid off as TV Patrol Iloilo accomplished unprecedented feats despite the many limitations.
After emerging national finalist in its first year, it is now history how TV Patrol Iloilo won over the goliaths of Philippine television when it emerged as Best TV News Program in the entire country in the 2004 Catholic Mass Media Awards. No other local news program has ever achieved such feat in the entire 26 years of the CMMA, making TV Patrol Iloilo a genuine pride not only of ABS-CBN, but also of the Ilonggos.
As its marks its year 2 in Iloilo, ABS-CBN TV 10, under the dynamic leadership of our station manager, Charie Ginete-Ilon, promises even greater and bigger surprises for our Kapamilya. Starting our 2nd year with a big bang, ABS-CBN poured some P27 million to bring Dinagyang not only to Iloilo and Western Visayas, but, more importantly, to the entire Philippines and to the world. A first in the more than 30 years of the Dinagyang Festival and, truly, a first in Philippine television.
ABS-CBN, as official media partner, will broadcast Dinagyang 2005 on Sunday, January 23, locally over TV 10-Iloilo and simulcast live nationwide over Studio 23 and globally through The Filipino Channel.
Thus, Filipinos anywhere in the Philippines and abroad, especially Ilonggos, can enjoy the fun and the excitement of Dinagyang as it actually happens. Truly, a big boost not only to Dinagyang and to local tourism, but also to the entire city and province of Iloilo. What a great way to celebrate the enduring culture and spirit of the Ilonggos and what a remarkable way to celebrate the 2nd year of ABS-CBN TV 10 and TV Patrol sa Diyes!
