Salvador clinches triathlon crown
* Noel Salvador, 31, bests 19 other triathletes from Antique, Negros, Pangasinan, and Iloilo
BUGASONG, Antique -- National triathlete Noel Salvador overwhelmed defending champion Giovani Nonato to clinch the crown in the 2005 Bugasong Open Sprint Triathlon Competition here last Saturday.
A native of Bacolod, Salvador impressed the crowd with his swimming skills as he started an early lead and reached the shore first.
The 31-year-old national champion stretched his lead in the 20K bike race, finishing the 6K run in a solo victory with 1:07:16.
Salvador, who ranked second in the 2004 National Triathlon Elite Category held in Guimaras, bested 19 other triathletes from Antique, Negros, Pangasinan, and Iloilo.
Salvador received a trophy from Professional Sports Organizer Team Inc., one of the sponsors, and a P5,000 cash prize from Myrah Robinson, the main sponsor of the event since 2003.
Robinson herself was a marathoner in Boston, USA.
Last year's champion Nonato had a tough comeback in the bike and run race after reaching the shore in 12th place.
The 42-year-old Miag-ao resident was trailing Alexandra Ganzon, who was second placer in the first lap of the bike race.
Nonato, closely followed by Bobby Española, completely overtook her in the rough road halfway to go in the second lap.
Nonato and Española were fighting for the second position nearing the last 200-meter of the bike race.
Española, though riding off the bike first, almost did not complete the race.
Nonato, who was a few meters behind Española, nearly caught up but he almost fainted.
Española finished second, clocking 1:09:03 just 42 seconds faster than Nonato, who finished the course third with 1:09:45. (Reynan G. Sularan)
