Paraw Regatta set Feb. 19, 20
THE City Government is preparing for another prominent tourism-oriented activity - the annual Iloilo Paraw Regatta.
The regatta, a race of native outriggers locally known as paraw, is slated on February 19 and 20.
Now on its 33rd year, it has become a tourist attraction drawing foreign visitors and sailboat racing enthusiasts from all parts of the Philippines.
This year's edition of the event is being organized by the Iloilo Paraw Regatta Foundation Inc. with the support of the local governments of Iloilo City, Iloilo Province, and Guimaras Province.
In his executive order, Mayor Jerry Treñas named Manuel Villa Jr. and Tourism Regional Director Edwin Trompeta as chairman and vice chairman, respectively, of the event's executive committee. Members are City Tourism Officer Heloise Javellana, Executive Assistant Francis Cruz, and OIC Provincial Tourism Officer Gilbert Marin.
An honorary committee was also created with Treñas and Governor Niel Tupas as chairmen and Governor Rahman Nava, Councilor Merci Drilon-Garcia, and Trompeta as members.
Aside from the traditional boat race at the Iloilo and Guimaras Straits, this year's Paraw Regatta will have side events, including a sailboat slalom race. There will also be a pinta paraw (sail painting contest), porma balas (sand sculpting), angling competition, and a Miss Paraw Regatta beauty pageant.
