WITH the sugar industry losing, the government is giving out P10.5 million as education and livelihood assistance to sugar workers in the country.
Labor Secretary Patricia Santo Tomas said the money is "part of the pre-Labor Day celebration in Western Visayas as well as other sugar producing regions in the country."
Santo Tomas said the P9 million coming from the Sugar Industry Foundation Inc. (SIFI) will be given to the almost 14,000 sugar workers and their dependents to finance livelihood projects as well as emergency programs in health care and training for them.
On the other hand, the P1.5 million from the United Sugar Producers Federation of the Philippines, Inc. (Unifed) is earmarked to finance the Sugar Workers Education Assistance (SWEA) for the 2005-2006 school years with 747 sugar workers and their dependents would be benefited.
Santo Tomas said the amount would be released on April 27 during the inauguration of classrooms under the Galing sa Mamamayang Pilipino Abroad (CGMA) project to be held in Bacolod City.
The P10.5 million funds, Santo Tomas said, is part of the government's
Social Amelioration Program (SAP) that seeks to counter the vulnerability of the sugar industry.
It was in 1991 when the SAP was established through Republic Act 6982 also known as the Sugar Amelioration Act of 1991 to augment the income of the sugar workers.(Sunnex Luzon)
