Anti-smoking body chief appeals for cooperation By Lory Ann B. Bilbao
ILOILO City Councilor Julienne Baronda continued to appeal to Ilonggos to adhere to the Anti-Smoking Ordinance.
"We appeal to the public to cooperate with us," said Baronda, chair of Iloilo City Anti-Smoking Task Force (Icast), during Tuesday's unveiling of the anti-smoking tarpaulin streamer in front of Busay Restaurant at Paseo de Iloilo.
The Icast is part of a three-year plan to combat smoking in the city. Iloilo City is envisioned to be smoke-free by 2010.
Before the unveiling of the streamer, which reads, "Smoking is not cool," Baronda signed a memorandum of agreement with the program sponsors, including Atty. Joshua Alim, Globe Telecom VP for external affairs Jerry Yntig, Iloilo Ilang-Ilang Jaycees president April Besara and City Police Director Senior Supt. Norlito Bautista.
Baronda called on Bautista to ensure that city policemen strictly adhere to the ordinance.
"I'm told that many policemen smoke even in the middle of the road," she added.
Bautista, a non-smoker, said he accepts the challenge.
In fact, he prohibits his men from smoking inside the Iloilo City Police Office.
Other program sponsors are: Sanggunianng Kabataan, Philippine Health Association, GMA 6, Bombo Radyo, Jaro Archdiocesan Social Action Center and Robinsons Place Iloilo.
