Iloilo Toyota captures NBA Governor's Cup
ILOILO Toyota booked a solid performance in the last quarter to defeat Ceres-Hapee-Cebu, 83-74, to bring home the NBA Governor's Cup at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School last weekend.
The four-team tournament, dubbed a "short but very tough league," gathered champion teams from Bacolod, Iloilo and Cebu and a runner-up from Bacolod.
Other teams are Hapee-Ceres of Cebu, Bacolod champion Ybac Emarken and Shakey's-JS Shell.
Iloilo Toyota, composed of Iloilo Warriors cagers, Ceres and NBA Summer Open champion Ybac-Emarken ended the tournament with identical 2-1 records but the Iloilo team brought home the crown by posting a better quotient.
Ybac defeated JS Shell, 83-75, after dealing Toyota a 74-73 loss. But Ybac's 88-98 defeat to Ceres dashed its hopes to win the title.
A victory by the Jun Noel-coached Ceres would have them easily bagged the title after sweeping its first two games.
But Toyota, which dumped Shakey's-JS Shell, 77-76, Friday, eventually ruled.
Ilonggo Elbin Leonida, the tournament MVP, posted 16 points and orchestrated a buzzer beater, setting up Dino Manuel, Roel Balgos and Ely Olarte for the decisive baskets that allowed Toyota to break away from a 72-all tie in the final two minutes.
Olarte fired four straight points while Manuel added 12 points. Edsel Señeres, Edu Allado and Tom Arceñas combined for 29.
Also in the mythical five were Manuel, Ceres-Hapee's Chris Caritas and Aries Gloria, Manuel and Ybac's Leo Bat-og.
