THE Iloilo City Police Office has stepped up security measures in preparation for the opening of classes Monday.

Senior Superintendent Norlito Bautista, city police director, said the city police force is implementing the "Oplan Balik Eskwela" to prevent crimes in school zones and other public places.

Standby personnel will be deployed in schools to deter the presence of snatchers, pickpockets and swindlers.

"We expect that thieves will take advantage of the situation and victimize unsuspecting students so we are preparing for that," Bautista said.

The police also tapped the assistance of barangay officials and village police to augment their operations.

Policemen in plainclothes will also be deployed in malls and other commercial establishments.

"I advise students to be aware of the persons around them. They should secure their personal belongings especially their wallets, cell phones, and jewelry items," Bautista reminded students.

He also warned them against talking to strangers "because we expect budol-budol (swindlers) gang to operate."

"If they notice suspicious-looking persons, they should report them immediately to the nearest police station or security guards so that policemen can respond quickly," Bautista added.
