Iloilo Milo champ wins Independence Day Run
THE most awaited third face off between the Iloilo best rival, Adonis Lubaton and Abraham Garces, turned the Independence Day Run into more exciting run race in the city next to Milo Marathon.
Only that, the Iloilo Leg Milo Marathon champion, Lubaton overwhelmed the Adlaw Sang Iloilo 10K champion, Garces last weekend in a race sponsored by the Winners Gym, Iloilo Provincial Government, Iloilo City Government and organized by the Iloilo Professional Sports Organizer Team, Incorporated (Prosports).
Lubaton, the 26-year old Sara native, was the third placer of the 1st Philppine International Marathon for Pasig River held in Manila last February while the pure Karay-a speaking Garces was the Baragatan Festival Governor's Cup 10-Miles Run champion competed last June 4 in Palawan.
A Philippine Army assigned in the 2nd Infantry Division Tanay, Rizal, Lubaton was informed about the run through Boyet Rentoy, Prosports president and then, with the help of the coronels Manuel Garin and Delfin Fernandez, he went home in Sara last May 24 for the short race preparation.
Unlike with Lubaton who had rested enough time, Garces went slow taking only a week rest, also admitting that he was totally affected by his Palawan race. "I am not physically conditioned which is completely different from my last run in Palawan where I felt so light", said the 26-year old marathoner.
While Lubaton timed a minute faster than his last 10K time recorded in Silay, Negros, 34:25 to an improved 33:06, Garces clocked 35:14, more than two minutes slower than his best 10K time, 33:10.
Meanwhile, both entering the limelight is fast newcomer Gary Moreno of Antique with 37:41, who had a tough fight pacing up with more improved runner Mark Ong who finished fourth.
In 5K Male Category, Wilfedo Gelladula ousted new face Mark Anthony Caintic to second berth when he left the latter almost 100m behind. Caintic closely fought with Ruben Sumiguit in the turning point but Suminguit paced down in the last 2K of the run.
On the distaff side, Emielyn Gestopa surprised long time race partners Janet Galleno and Ellaine Balgo. Galleno occupied the second seed while Balgo secured the third berth.
The race was assisted by the Magni Nominis Umbra and Iloilo Traffic Management and co-sponsored by Serve Well Purified Drinking Water, Winners Promotion and Faforma. (Reynan Sularan)
