Chusuey urges bizmen: Continue investing amid turmoil

HENRY O. Chusuey, president of the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Panay Inc., urged his fellow businessmen to have a strong resolve and a positive outlook amid the political crisis gripping the country.

This statement was included in his speech delivered during the induction of the officials of FFCCCP on Thursday at the Amigo Terrace Hotel.

"These are trying times but we can overcome these challenges. Now is the time to make positive plans for commerce and industry," he said.

"Amid the present situation, the Philippines is regarded worldwide as among the enticing leaders for capital investment as shown in studies compiled by the Wiltshire Associates of the State of California, as the leading investment potential in terms of market regulation, investor protection, transparency, market liquidity and volatility, settlement, proficiency, transaction costs and productive labor practices," he said.

"Let us resolve firmly to be fitting examples to our foreign counterparts. Now is the time to open our door in business, to invest and to venture. Let us show the whole world that we Filipino businessmen can flourish and overcome in these most trying times. Let us help our economy. Through investments, we can spur economic activity and create employment opportunities for our poor countrymen, giving those in our employ a chance for a decent life and a better future," he added.

Chusuey revealed that he had a talk with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and that the latter urged him that he not only maintains his present investments in Iloilo and Boracay but should also invest in other parts of the country to create more employment and in turn help the economy.

He also enjoined the different chambers of FFCCCP to support the present administration, stressing that the crisis be solved through constitutional means.

Nationwide, the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce has 170 chambers headed by Francis Chua, who was the inducting officer in Thursday's event.

Chua, in his inspirational message, reminded those present that "we have a job to do. Let's leave the political matters to the politicians.

Instead, let's think of how we can increase investments and tourism in the country."
