Blood Donors Month celebrated
THE month of July will honor the contribution of the Blood Donors as the whole country will celebrate the Blood Donors Month in pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1021 dated June 9, 1997, declaring the month of July of every year as " Blood Donors Month". The main objective of this is to increase awareness about the benefits of voluntary blood donation as well as to strengthen partnership among the stakeholders.
According to the Department of Health, any person within 16 to 6 years old; and weighs at least 45 kilograms or 100 pounds can be a donor where the doctors will make sure your temperature must not be more than 37 degrees Centigrade, a pulse at regular rhythm (must be between 50 to 100 per minute), blood pressure that must be between 90 to 160 mm Hg. for systolic and 60 to 100 mm Hg. for diastolic and hemoglobin level must be 125 grams per liter to 170 grams per liter. Meeting these requirements will then enable you to donate your blood.
DOH CHD Western Visayas Regional Director Lydia S. Depra-Ramos emphasized that giving blood is a simple and easy procedure.
"It takes only 5 to 10 minutes and 250 to 450 ml.(milliliters) of your blood. This amount is replenished by the body within 3 to 5 hours and the amount extracted is easily replaced by the body. No special food is required and you can resume your work after a while"." "Share your blood because someone might need it," she added.
A normal and healthy person can give blood every three months without harmful effects to the body, and may go to the hospital or to the Iloilo Blood Bank if you are willing to donate, anytime of your convenience.
The Department of Health will also conduct other advocacy activities in relation to the Blood Donors Month celebration. (PR)
