Police given 15 days to stop illegal gambling

PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) Chief Arturo Lumibao gave the Police Regional Office (PRO) 6 15 days to stop illegal gambling.

He gave this directive to PRO6 Chief Doroteo Reyes during his visit in Iloilo City last Wednesday.

"We will have a hard time following this directive because it's not easy to stop jueteng operations here," Reyes said.

"What we can do is to gradually eradicate it through our continued operations," he added.

Earlier, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ordered anti-jueteng czar and Puerto Princesa city mayor Edward Hagedorn to completely stop jueteng operations in the country by September 15.

Meanwhile, it is expected that close to a million persons have been displaced by the government's anti-jueteng drive.

To buffer this, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) and the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) are providing livelihood and educational assistance to those who are displaced by the anti-jueteng campaign. (KVC)
