Ex-solon Narciso Monfort dies, 77
By Kathy Villalon Cinco

FORMER Fifth District Congressman Narciso Monfort succumbed to his illness of the prostate at 8 p.m. Monday in his Mandaluyong home. He was 77.

Monfort's wife, Chit, confirmed this.

"Narsing died peacefully in the company of his family after receiving the last rites," her text message read.

Monfort was born on May 1, 1928. He went to Lublub Elementary School, Dumangas for his elementary education; Barotac Nuevo School for his high school education; and graduated with a degree in Liberal Arts from the College of San Agustin (now University of San Agustin).

He worked his way through college by being a laboratory assistant in San Pablo Hospital (now Saint Paul's Hospital).

When his congressional term ended in 2004, he stayed in Europe and later on, went home to the Philippines and resided in Mandaluyong.

In his golden days, Monfort published "By Deeds Alone", an autobiographical sketch of his journey through life.

"I have not given much thought to my past because I was obsessed with the present. Significant things are happening today, too many things had to be done today. One must dignify all that one does today so that yesterday can aptly justify one's today's," goes one of the passages in his book.

In this book, Monfort also spoke highly of his family and of his mother's hometown, Dumangas. He referred to it as a "land where the people are hospitable and caring."

It was in Dumangas that he celebrated his 75th birthday.

In his book, Monfort said he had the undivided attention of his parents, being an only child. He discovered a home that was filled with warmth and love.

Monfort is survived by his wife, Chita and his children Joey and Mitchie. (With reports from RPS)
