Transport strike slated Monday By Lory Ann B. Bilbao
ILOILO City Alliance of Drivers Association (Icada) President Edgar Salarda said transport groups would hold a nationwide strike on Monday.
In line with the order of Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Piston) National, Icada's umbrella organization, Salarda said it would take place from 12:01 a.m. Monday to 12 midnight.
"We will stop our operations as a form of reaching out to the government our grievances over the oil price hikes and the expanded value-added tax (e-VAT) which add to our economic difficulties," Salarda said.
Seafarers from Buenavista and Jordan, Guimaras and buses and jeepneys from Antique, Roxas, Kalibo and the city will join.
Transport groups from Arevalo, Mandurriao, Hibao-an, Molo Timawa, Fundidor, Calumpang and the northern part of Iloilo, as well as tricycle drivers, will also join.
Groups that will not join are those from Jaro Balabago, La Paz, Leganes, Sta. Barbara, San Miguel, Oton, Villa, Calumpang, Lapuz and Barrio Obrero.
The Jaro CPU Brotherhood Drivers Association headed by Roming Herrera said that a total of 315 CPU drivers are yet to decide whether to join the strike or not.
The Department of Education (DepEd) announced that classes would go on despite the strike.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas said in a radio interview that office hours at the City Hall wouldn't be affected by the strike.
He added that he has been informed that there will be groups that won't join the strike, so he's assured that the public won't be stranded.
