Inmate escapes, takes away guard's gun

A PROVINCIAL guard will be facing administrative charges after an inmate bolted Sunday from the Iloilo Rehabilitation Center (IRC) taking away his service firearm.
Prison Guard 2 Samuel Sollesta will be slapped for gross neglect of duty when inmate Joemarie Desilao, 22, single of Barangay San Juan, Anilao escaped from IRC annex maximum compound at around 6:45 p.m.
IRC warden Juan Mabugat said Sollesta, who was detailed in annex tower, approached and released Desilao from cell Y then asked him of he could assist him in bringing his personal belongings to guard's quarters located at mezzanine floor of annex building.
Later, after fixing all his personal belongings, Sollesta reportedly left Desilao at the mezzanine area to take a bath.
Desilao then took advantage of the opportunity as he proceeded to Sollesta's locker and took away the guard's .45 caliber pistol.
He then passed the main gate in a very relax manner until he finally climbed the IRC perimeter wall.
Other prison guards were not able to notice because they were reportedly busy viewing a television show.
Mabugat was irked after knowing that no single jail guard was manning the main gate when Desilao escaped.
It was learned that there were four guards on duty during the incident but, they were not in their specific assignment.
They only knew that Desilao escaped after Sollesta finished his shower and discovered that Desilao was already missing along with his service firearm.
Desilao was charged for murder with the use of unlicensed firearm along with his brother, Exequil and cousin Alberto Desilao for killing their neighbor with surname Cordero in 1999.
The three both faces the charges before Judge Rogelio Amador in Regional Trial Court Branch 66 in Barotac Viejo.
It was learned that Sollesta was also the same guard on duty when Jerry Sufeciensia, a suspect in multiple murder escaped in July 2004.
However, he was recaptured in July 2005 during an operation at San Enrique, Iloilo.
