District jail says inmate wrongly identified

THE gasoline collection hold-up heist on November 7 is a typical case of mistaken identity, according to Iloilo City District Jail (ICDJ).

ICDJ, which houses more than 500 inmates, is the flagship jail facility in Western Visayas under the auspices of the Regional Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (RBJMP) 6.

To recall, driver and collector Anthony Vescayda of Santos Shell Gasoline Station tagged ICDJ inmate Gilbert Hortilla as one of the robbers who divested the establishment's Timawa-Molo branch of its collection last Monday.

But upon verification of Vescayda's statements to both police and media, it was learned that the said inmate was detained at the ICDJ since November 2, 2005 for possession of illegal drugs.

The alleged victim Vescayda, identified the inmate in the rogue's gallery of the Iloilo City Police Office after the incident.

To clear the issue, RBJMP 6 Regional Director Senior Superintendent Romeo S. Vio coordinated with Molo Philippine National Police (PNP) Station to let Vescayda personally and positively identify Hortilla.

Vescayda was brought to ICDJ facility in Ungka, Jaro but dismissed the inmate as the holdupper.

The victim admitted that there is a remarkable facial resemblance between Hortilla and that of the real culprit but noted the great differences in their complexion and body physique.

Hortilla, who is thin and has dark complexion, stands 4'11" while the suspect is about 5'6" tall, well-built, and with fair complexion.

PNP and BJMP spearheaded the police line-up direct identification and was witnessed by the members of Iloilo tri-media upon proper coordination with ICDJ warden Chief Inspector Amelito Fuentes and BJMP 6 Assistant Regional Director Superintendent Rodolfo Rivera. (Jimmy Britanico)
