City Proper streets named 'China Town' By Lory Ann B. Bilbao
THE triangular area in the City Proper bounded by J.M Basa-Iznart-Aldeguer Streets was declared as Iloilo China Town.
The City Council Wednesday, through the proposal of Councilors Merci Drilon-Garcia and Jed Mabilog, declared the said city streets as the town of Filipino Chinese people of the City.
Garcia said these areas were the venues of the Chinese New Year celebrations.
"We are the first city outside Luzon to celebrate Chinese New Year," Garcia said.
However, the declaration only for the duration of the said celebration.
The Chinese New Year celebration falls every last week of January up to the second week of February.
The resolution stated that the Chinese Filipino Community had made great contributions to the economic and social progress of Iloilo City.
Improving and strengthening the celebration of the Chinese New Year here is also cited to be a need in promoting the tourism industry and to therefore attract investors and generate more income for the City Government.
The said Chinese New Year celebration has become a national tourist attraction./LABB
