Freedom Grandstand chessers rule Gaisano team tourney
THE Freedom Grandstand Chess Center team led by NM Cesar Mariano ran roughshod over the opposition to win the post-Christmas chess team tournament sponsored by Congressman Raul Gonzalez Jr. at the Gaisano Mall here.
Mariano, along with teammate-son Mark and Oton standout Roderick Lagoc, scored 7.5 points in the 9-team, 2-board, single round robin team event held December 27th to 29th. Freedom Grandstand Chess center took home the P2,000 top cash prize. The Napulak team of NM Boyet Lavega, Freddie Tabanao and Mark Gustilo took second place and the P1,000 runner-up purse half-a-point behind Mariano's team.
Besides winning the championship for his team, Mariano also pocketed the top prize for Board 1. Tabanao emerged the winner on Board 2.
The other teams that took part in the tournament were IBP, bannered by NM Horizon Villanueva and Eldrid Antiquera; Rockers, led by CPUstandout Bryan Tubilleja; Big Brothers, with Billy Villanueva, Jonathan Aguilar and Leo Aguirre; Pawasak, led by University of San Agustin top board Michael Cartojano and Florante Tuquero; GML, with veterans Gil Libutaque and MarioLena; Barrio Obrero, with Nemesio "Boy" Orlina at the helm; and the 4Rs, with Rodiel Razo.
The 4Rs team came in a far third with 5.0 points, while IBP finished fourth with 4.5 points.
Meanwhile, Oton chess patron Nonoy Briones announced that a better 2nd DWP Invitational Tournament will be conducted in a still undisclosed hotel venue this coming May.
Briones said the 2006 edition of the event, which is funded in part by contributions from California's Department of Water and Power employees, will offer bigger purses and will essentially retain its invitational and FIDE-style knockout format.
The first edition of the tournament, held last November, was won by NM Ted Montoyo of Bacolod City. (A.E. Boy Espejo Jr.)
