City readies for extra dirty work on Dinagyang Festival By Lory Ann B. Bilbao
HOW dirty is the city now? How much more after January 28 and 29?
Expecting a huge audience filling up the streets of the city, Dinagyang Committee on Sanitation Raul Gallo of the General Services Office and Committee on Health Chairman Urminico Baronda, chief of the City Health Office, laid plans to ready the city before and after the grand festival happens.
Baronda said 150 first aid personnel will be designated in four judging areas while ambulances and medical teams will be on alert in food stalls during the food festival, which lasts until 12 midnight.
He added that there were nevertheless, minor cases last year and hopefully nothing harder might happen than dealing with dehydrations, ulcer among the crowd, and injuries and bruises among the dancers.
What has been a major case the city health dealt with last year was the lighting up of firecrackers by some tribe members, which can pose danger. He said that other than these, there are no major emergency cases.
He added that 17 first aid stations will be put up in the strategic areas of the festivities.
On the other hand, Gallo said 30 portable toilets would be distributed to the four judging areas in the city. The portalets are unisex. Deodorizer and disinfectant will be provided for.
As always, the grand day, Sunday, the last day remains the dirtiest day of the city life. Nevertheless, the committee on sanitation is ready to face the garbage problem said Gallo.
A clean up starts Saturday or the "Do Day." The major thoroughfares of the city such as J.M. Basa Streets, Iznart, Ledesma, Gen. Luna, Valeria and Diversion road going to the airport will be cleaned up.
Government agency such as the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is one of the buddies of the City Government in the said activity.
