By Nelson C. Robles

THE Oton `Bantay Dagat' Task Force led by Edgar "Moling" Paviano, 40, and Cesar Mascarinas, 35, residents of Barangay East Poblacion had apprehended a trawler at around 5 p.m. last Jan. 6, 2006 with in their municipal water jurisdiction.

Prior to the incident, the duo had sought clearance to operate and police assistance from Mayor Carina Flores in anticipation for any untoward incident that may possibly occur in their performance of duty.

The Task Force team was assisted by the municipality PNP personnel identified as P/Sir. Insp. Salvador Dagon, Jr., PO1 Rosen do Nova and PO1 Ernie Mall orca

The said trawler manned by a certain Junie Sabares who identified himself as the boat captain with his three other companions were fined P2,000.00 bail each before their release as necessary charges are being readied.

Confiscated from their position were a neat of very fine texture and four tabs of fresh fish which was reportedly distributed to various non-government charity institutions of their choice.

The recent success of monitoring illegal fishing in Oton municipal coastal water was a result of the close-in supervision of its former FARM-C (Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management - Council) chairman, Daniel Palma, 50, now incumbent Barangay Capt. of Poblacion South, Oton.

Palma had implemented a strategy to make their massive campaign against illegal fishing more effective by encouraging the cooperation of all Bantay Dagat volunteers concerned in their municipality.

Palma had expressed his appreciation to Governor Niel D. Tupas Sr. for providing them a boat patrol which somehow had contributed to eradicate illegal fishing in Oton.

Meanwhile, the fishing vessel used for trawling reportedly owned by a certain Joper Carlo Totesora, of Barangay Tabayan, Tigbauan, Iloilo, is docked at the Oton Municipal Fishing Port nearby pending for the arrival of the owner to reclaim it.
