Tupas slams 'No-el' proposal By Lory Ann B. Bilbao
ONE of the issues that is agitating the people is the proposal of the Constitutional Commission (ConCom) to cancel the scheduled elections in 2007.
"Let me say this clearly and loudly am not in favor of the no el or no elections proposal," said Iloilo Governor Niel Tupas Sr.
"I am against this because the mandate given to me in May 2004 elections was for a term of three years .I want to give the people of Iloilo the opportunity to judge me on my performance through the ballot, and that should happen in the May 2007 elections and not in 2010," he added.
Tupas announced this during his State of the Province Address (Sopa) during the regular session of the Provincial Board Tuesday last week.
Trenas though said the LCP with which he stands as the president has no officials stand yet but whatever the stand is, it will still consult the Union of Local Authorities in the Philippines for the final say.
Just Saturday night the Ulap decided to campaign for signatures to approve the charter change where an extended term of the president is carried with.
There should be three percent of registered voters' signatures in every district and 30 percent of the total registered voters in the country. Ulap members expressed confidence they would acquire the required number.
