South Coast International School showcases local designer's collection By Jeanne Tan-Te
SOUTH Coast International School, on its Second Foundation Day Anniversary Celebration last February 25, showcased the fashion collection of Nonoy Jaranilla, a designer of ten years.
The event was part of South Coast's two-day series of activities. Held on a Saturday evening, the school program simulated an atmosphere of a real fashion show with usherettes in formal gowns, a ticketed dinner service, a modeling ramp complete with technical lights, a good sound system and a reputable fashion designer to showcase his creations.
The school also hired a professional choreographer, Grecor Permalan, to direct the show. Permalan revealed that the show's theme was a result of his collaboration with Jaranilla about his own notion on the four elements of nature, namely the earth, wind, fire, and water, as well as the seven colors of the rainbows, which give "life" to fabrics. Except for the cotillion and the bridal entourage collection, each design is an interpretation of the choreographer's concept that Jaranilla also complemented with the individual model's qualities. Students from the different levels and some parents presented the designer-apparels.
Many of the designs revealed simple but well-defined lines. The choices of colors were bright and vibrant but harmonious. However, what is more worth-noting about the event is the fact that as young as pre-schoolers exhibited the collection with confidence and easy flowing movement. This gives a well-rehearsed impression, if not a professional feel, of the whole presentation.
According to Rafael E. Monteclaro, Jr., school administrator and owner, the modeling event was part of the school's skills development program. As a matter of fact, they have been holding mini talent shows every Friday during the early months of the school year in order to "shake off" the feeling of stage fright among their students. Monteclaro discloses that they want their students to excel not only in their academic skills but more importantly in their social and personality development areas. He further revealed that this objective arose out of his own observation that in many of the social gatherings which he has attended as an adult, many of his former schoolmates who used to rise in the academics during their school days, were not able to socialize well during these occasions. He said he does not want students from their school to become out of place in many of their social occasions as grown ups later on.
With this forming part of the school's objective, South Coast International School gives new meaning to the phrase "your community-based school with an international perspective". And yes! The school deserves a professional designer's confidence to showcase his creations in their Foundation Day event.
