ICPO creates 'lampitaw' group vs. thieves, crooks
By Ruby P. Silubrico

THE Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) has established a "lampitaw" group to address problems against thieveries and snatching in Iloilo City.

What’s your opinion on Arroyo’s emergency rule? Post comment.

ICPO directors, Senior Supt. Norlito Bautista said Wednesday that he decided to form such group to run after against crooks and thieves who victimize shoppers, students and local or international visitors.

Lampitaw is a hiligaynon word, which means "detective".

Every precinct will assign four intelligence operatives who will be assigned in public markets, malls, churches and will also disguise as passengers to really detect the snatchers and thieves.

"We came up with this program to eradicate snatching and thieveries in our area or to at least minimize it. This also serves as part of our police visibility," Bautista said.

Bautista said that he has already coordinated with the drivers associations for trisikad, tricycle and jeepneys to inform them of the said program. He has also informed managers and security guards assigned in various malls.

This will take effect on Monday and the "lampitaw" group will be augmented by mobile patrols and cops on bike while checkpoints in all entrance and exit points will be continued.

"But, we need the cooperation of the community for the realization of the project," Bautista said.

"We hope that with this program, snatching and thieveries and other street crimes will decline and be minimized," he added.
