Surprise, surprise By Vincent Alocada
ALLOW me to speak my mind and call spade a spade.
When I heard that 2 Ilonggos made it into the final fourteen of Starstruck, I once took pride in being an Ilonggo. Upon seeing the female Ilonggo contestant, Sarah Larsson, I thought that she would give the other female aspirants a good fight (but she got eliminated at the early phase of the competition). However, when I saw the male Ilonggo representative to the most followed and popular talent search, I couldn't help asking how and why? Why did Gian Carlos make it to the final fourteen?
To talk turkey, I didn't find anything extraordinary about Gian's looks. In a contest like Starstruck, looks matter a lot. However, it finally dawned on me why Gian made it to the final 14 and final 6 ( by the time I got to see him and the rest of the final 6 in person and interview them last Feb. 20). Well, he really looks good in an up close and personal encounter. He oozes with an appeal that's rather mysterious to be explained. May "K" man gali, I told myself.
I correctly predicted the outcome of Starstruck batches 1 and 2, at least for the male. From the beginning of the competition, I just knew that Mark Herras and Mike Tan would bag the title during their respective Starstruck seasons. For this batch, I placed my bet on Chuck Allie from Davao. But again, life is full of surprises. Upon the announcement of the final four last Feb. 26, I never expected that Marky from Mountain Province would secure one of the two slots allotted for the boys in the finals. I really thought it would be a battle between Chuck and Gian. Both Marky and Gian told me in an interview they want the Ilonggo bet to be their "nemesis" in the finals if ever they'd make it to the final four. Well, Marky got his wish and again, I was wrong. Instead of a Gian-Chuck bout, we would be witnessing a Gian-Marky showdown in the finals.
Without Chuck in the final scene, Gian's chances to bring home the bacon have definitely been boosted. Objectively speaking as a writer and as an individual, not as an Ilonggo, Gian's star appeal is far better than that of Marky's, although I'd have to say that the upcoming judgement night would be a battle royale between 2 exotic male lookers, with indigenous appeal if I may say. Ilonggo versus Igorot, pretty interesting, huh. Take looks out of the equation with talent as the sole factor, it's still a level-playing ground both for Gian and Marky. Will Marky's ability to set the dance floor on fire outshine Gian's dexterity in playing the guitar and vice versa?
As to who will emerge victorious on judgement night, only fate knows. He was never my favorite in the beginning, unlike Mark Herras and Mike Tan. But if I were to act as a Madam Auring at this point, Gian Carlos would win...and I want him to win.
Amen!
