DOG bites in the Province of Iloilo has increased some 55 percent in 2005 as compared in 2004.

The records is based on the statistics from the Provincial Health Office-Provincial Epidemiology and Surveillance.

In terms of human rabies cases, 94 percent was caused by dog bites in 2005, a four percent increase against 90 percent recorded in 2004.

Cat bites contributed six percent in 2005 while 10 percent in 2004. Nine percent was noted due to dog meat ingestion in 2004.

Based on the record, there were 16 human fatalities due to rabies.

Dr. Patricia Grace Trabado, Provincial Health Officer I, did not say that the situation has reached the alarming level but instead she called for the cooperation of the people to be responsible dog owners.

She said they are conducting a whole year round campaign province-wide about rabies with focus on its prevention and control.

Trabado also recognized the help of the media in information dissemination and public education of the program.

She also advised the public to have their dogs immunized against rabies at three months old and every year thereafter.

"They should not allow there pet dog to roam the streets; they should take care of their pets, have them bathe, give clean food and provide sleeping quarters," she said. (Capitol News)
