Three-cornered fight seen in 5th district congressional race By Jay Dooma Balnig
POLITICAL observers in Northern Iloilo predicted a three-cornered fight for the congressional post in 2007 in the vote-rich district of Iloilo.
Representative Rolex Suplico previously announced that his brother, Colonel Enrique "Boy" Suplico is running for congress so that he could continue his brother's priority projects and programs.
His cousin, Board Member Niel Tupas Jr. is also groomed by his family to run for Congress after Rolex's term expires on May 2007.
Also eyed to run is 5th District Lakas CMD Chairman and Concepcion, Iloilo last-termer mayor, Raul Banias or Ajuy last-termer mayor, Jett Roxas.
Banias claimed that he is still the Lakas chairman in Iloilo's 5th District and he has no plan of leaving the ruling administration party.
Both Suplico and Tupas belong to the opposition party, the LDP Lacson Wing and Liberal Party, respectively.
However, the administration party, the Lakas CMD is also fielding a candidate.
Banias and Roxas, both doctors by profession, have a good relationship with majority of the northern town mayors based on the recent get-together of Iloilo political leaders in Manila Hotel, Roxas Boulevard, Manila.
Both enjoyed the full support of mayors Lowel Arban of Lemery, Simeon Ganzon of Balasan, Felipe Bernal of Carles, and Pedro Alarcon of Batad.
Still neutral are mayors Nepthalie Salcedo of Sara, Ronnie Balasico of San Rafael, Pio Villanueva of San Dionisio, and Rene Cordero of Estancia.
Barotac Viejo Mayor Raul Tupas is expected to give his full support and loyalty to his brother, Niel Tupas Jr in the congressional race.
