NegOcc rules WVRAA 2006
ROXAS CITY - Negros Occidental emerged the overall champion in the 2006 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet by dominating the elementary and secondary divisions of the meet which was hosted by Capiz from March 16 to 20 here.
The overall champion garnered an aggregate of 793 points in both divisions of the meet which ended March 20.
Overall first runner up honors was clinched by Iloilo with 661.5 points with the host province tucking in the third spot with 330 points.
Aklan was fourth overall with 192.5 points, Antique fifth with 187.5 points and Guimaras in sixth place with 121.5 points.
The schools-based sports competition of the Department of Education has adopted the Points System for about a decade now, departing from the traditional medal system to determine winners.
There were 17 events entered in the five-day competitions that were participated in by about 3,000 athletes and officials from the six Western Visayas provinces.
Gov. Vicente Bermejo, Roxas City mayor Antonio Del Rosario, Capiz Schools Division Superintendent Lagrimas Ubal, city schools division superintendent Jesse Gomez and other local and school officials led the hosting of the regional meet.
Senator Manuel A. Roxas was the main guest of honor during the opening ceremonies. In his message, Roxas challenged the athletes to keep burning the fire of true sportsmanship and excellence in them.
