De Guzman: Recipient of Public Outreach International Award
By Rodofo Gumabong

THE American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) recently awarded the 2005-2006 Public Outreach Award in the International Outreach Category to Dr. Christopher Rey G. de Guzman, Iloilo's renowned asthma and allergy specialist.

Congratulations to the graduates of 2006! Post your graduation experiences and greetings here.

Dr. de Guzman, though holding his clinic at Iloilo Mission Hospital, Iloilo City, was moreover, granted the status of International Fellow of the AAAAI. He's also, so far, the only one from the Visayas and Mindanao regions that was granted this special distinction. They are only 3 active international fellow of the AAAAI, nationwide.

Dr. Stanley Goldstein, FAAAAI 2nd chairman, Practice and Policy Division, AAAAI Board of Directors cited the public outreach work of Dr. de Guzman to have captured the spirit of the award promoting the role of the allergologist/immunologist as well as the AAAAI and its resources. The worthwhile effort has had tremendous impact on the asthma and allergy patients, and the community in general.

Since 1995, Dr. de Guzman has worked closely (being the founding adviser and prime mover) with the Western Visayas Medical Center's Asthma Educational Club. The club serves as a vehicle for Filipino asthmatics to understand fully their disease. The club has consistently provided free allergy/asthma lectures every 1st Tuesday of the month for the past 10 years. Furthermore, Dr. de Guzman has coordinated ten consecutive and successful asthma fairs for the Ilonggo inhabitants and neighboring cities for the past 10 years.

As an award recipient, Dr. de Guzman was given full recogniation in the AAAAI Academy News and at the 2006 AAAAI Annual Business Meeting last March, 2006, held at Miami Beach, Florida, USA.

A priceless plaque was given to him as well as free trip to the USA, hotel accommodation and free registration to the said annual meeting.

Dr. de Guzman, his wife, Annabelle, a distinguished family medicine specialist and only son, Chris John, a very gifted child studying at the School of Tomorrow, flew to the scenic sunshine state of Florida, to claim his award. Physicians from the USA, lain America, Europe and Asia and the Pacific countries congratulated the Ilonggo physician for his achievement. They also urged him to continue his outreach as an advocate in the community for the very challenging field of allergy and immunology. "You have provided a strong example for others to follow" echoed de Guzman's fellow allergologist and immunologists from all over the world. Dr. de Guzman is also being used by Lord Jesus Christ as an example being an inspiring teacher, according to his medical students at the CPU College of Medicine. He's presently the chairman of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics of the said university.

Likewise, he, also, was deeply involved in the successful staging of the International Christian Medical Congress held as the CPU Campus, two years ago. Campus Crusade for Christ Medical Ministry head, Dr. Fortunato "Kryss" Cristobal, the dean of the Ateneo de Zamboanga College of Medicine coordinated the very successful event. Dr. de Guzman is slated to assume the Gideon's International Iloilo City Camp presidency in May this year, in preparation for the National Convention to be held at Iloilo City, the 1st week of February 2008. Dr. de Guzman had formerly served as Gideon's president in the year 2002, 2003, and 2004.

In the year 2002-2003, he was listed in the Contemporary Who's Who, Premier Edition. The governing board of editors of the American Biographical Institute, USA selected him as one of the people who' making a difference in the world today.

Dr. de Guzman, an exemplary achiever in the field of Medicine, credits his Lord Jesus Christ, as his main inspiration. He claims to give all back his achievements and titles for the glory of God whom he served. Thus, he has given time and effort to served even less privileged as exemplified by his Public Outreach Award. For in Matthew 25:45 says - "In as much as you have done them unto the least of them-you have done them unto me as said by Jesus Christ."
